Remote Sensing Pilot Program Helps Watershed Councils Predict the Effects of Environmental Disturbance on Water Quality
In the first two months of the pilot program, a wealth of temperature and turbidity data is being remotely uploaded to GeoOptix every hour. John Runyon, a principal ecologist at Cascade Environmental Group, has worked very closely with Sitka staff and the councils on this effort. John is enthusiastic about the potential for this application: “The Abernethy Creek water temperature and turbidity data sets, coupled with the manually collected water quality information from the other rivers and streams, will help the councils and partner organizations better understand and predict the effects of environmental disturbance on water quality and other parameters now and into the future.”
